was immediately affected, as the appointments were given

to Officers drawing dollars, but in the case of the

District Officer Mr. May suggested that the Sterling

Salary of the post should be £540 to £630 under the scheme

7.

With regard to the post of

District Officer, I may point out that, in fixing the

Sterling Salary of £420 to 2540 an anomaly arises since

the Assistant Superintendent of Police in Hongkong who is

on a Sterling Salary receives as much pay as the District

Officer who has the more responsible and arduous post. This

has been brought about by the fact that the dollar salary

of the two Assistant Superintendents of Police was $2,400

to $3,000 only, with an allowance of $1,200 per annum to

the Officer stationed at Tai Po who performed the duties

of Magistrate in addition to his Police duties. But when

the Sterling Salaries Scheme was introduced the salaries

of the Assistant Superintendents of Police were the only

ones in Cadet Appointments that were increased being turned

into Sterling at £420 to £540, and the Assistant

Superintendent in Hongkong being on a Sterling Salary thus

finds himself as well paid as the District Officer at Tai

Po.
